The shift towards Zero Emission Trucks (ZETs) is gaining momentum among Indian freight buyers and Logistics Service Providers (LSPs), driven by sustainability commitments and economic benefits. Marked by the demand for 7750 e-trucks at CEM Goa in July 2023 under NITI Aayog’s e-FAST program, this interest continues to grow.
On 24th July, Smart Freight Centre (SFC) organized a workshop on strategies to drive zero-emission truck (ZET) deployment at scale. The workshop was held under the e-FAST (Electric Freight Accelerator for Sustainable Transport – India) banner and moderated by Sharvari Patki, Program Head for e-Mobility at WRI India. The discussion convened decision-makers in the Indian freight ecosystem to deliberate on opportunities for ZET market development and deployment, aiming to translate ambition into tangible project.
Key insights from this session included:
💡 Strategic Infrastructure Investments: Prioritizing infrastructure development along high-traffic routes can optimize investments and support ZET adoption.
🔋 Battery and Charging Innovations: Advancements in battery technology and standardization across original equipment manufacturer (OEM) models can address charging times and range limitations, boosting adoption.
🏛️ Supportive Policies: Implementing policies like standardized charging rates, toll waivers, Gross Vehicle Weight relaxations, and comprehensive workforce training programs can strengthen the economic feasibility of ZETs spurring adoption.
🔍 Engaging Insurance Companies Early: Pilot experiences highlight the crucial role of insurance in the transition to ZETs. Involving insurance providers early in the solution design phase is essential for success.
